Extreme heat and children, 5 tips from pediatricians: "Beware of dehydration and heat stroke"

The heat waves that are affecting our country can represent a risk for the health of children , especially in the first years of life. In fact, the little ones have a reduced capacity for thermoregulation and a greater risk of dehydration compared to adults .
For this reason, the Italian Society of Pediatrics (SIP) reminds families of some simple but fundamental rules to protect children from high temperatures . "In the presence of intense heat, even brief and unprotected exposure can cause dehydration or heat stroke in children, especially in the first years of life. It is therefore essential to pay attention, adopting simple common sense measures to live the summer in serenity and safety", says the president of SIP Rino Agostiniani.
Here are the 5 SIP rules to protect children from the heat
Go out, yes, but not during the hottest hours of the day, between 11 am and 5 pm, especially with very young children. Avoid physical activity outdoors during the hottest hours, teaching children to go to ventilated places sheltered from the sun;
2. Offer water frequentlyChildren, especially young ones, do not always feel or communicate the stimulus of thirst. It is important to offer them water frequently, even if they do not ask for it, avoiding sugary or carbonated drinks. Breastfeeding, for infants, can be increased on the hottest days: breast milk provides them with the necessary hydration.
Yes to light meals, rich in seasonal fruit and vegetables, which contain water and mineral salts useful for replenishing what is lost through sweat. Avoid dishes that are too elaborate or rich in fat. Raw vegetables and fresh fruit are perfect for a refreshing snack. For lunch, especially on the beach, prefer single and light dishes, which can support the child in daily activities without weighing him down excessively. Yes to ice cream but not every day;
4. Air conditioning? Yes, but with cautionThe air conditioner can be used, the important thing is to keep a constant temperature of 24-25 degrees and use the dehumidifier. The temperature must be kept constant in all rooms because moving from one room to another could disturb the child. The same goes for the car: temperature of 24-25 degrees keeping the window a little open to prevent the passenger compartment from becoming too cold;
5. Choose light and light-colored clothesClothing should be comfortable, made of natural fibers such as cotton or linen, and light in color. Avoid synthetic or tight fabrics. When the child plays on the beach, it is a good idea to have him wear a light hat, preferably a perforated straw hat. Otherwise, he may retain heat with the risk of overheating his head.
